A brush fire east of the San Diego Wild Animal Park forced the closure of California 78 on Friday afternoon.

The fire started about 1:25 p.m. in Clevenger Canyon near the two-lane highway as it winds up a grade toward Ramona, the California Department of Forestry said.

By midday it had consumed more than 100 acres and had for a time threatened several structures, a forestry spokeswoman said. By late afternoon, the fire had stopped spreading.
