‘Dynasty’ a la ‘90s

“The Reagan era is on the way out. Glitz and glitter and spangles are going with it.

“So, we’ll be making some changes, too. Because our goal with ‘Dynasty’ is to turn it into a show of the ‘90s.”

But don’t expect ABC’s long-running series “to become ‘Hill Street Blues.’ ” As exec supervising producer David Paulsen noted, “We won’t be gritty. But we will be showing other sides to rich people--including deeper personal relationships.”

Added Paulsen--who came to the series following a longtime “Dallas” producing gig, “I didn’t come here to supervise the demise of a series.”

To the contrary, he explained, he’s hoping for a kind of rebirth. As proof, he teased, “Alexis, Krystle and Blake (and other veterans) will be getting some competition.”

Indeed, the series is scouting for new faces (and new bods) for a half dozen new roles. Among ‘em, says a casting source. . . .

A tough but sexy street kid--dubbed “Patrick Swayze-ish,” since he may do some dancing.

A Grace Kelly-ish cousin to Krystle.

A fun-loving, vixenish, unpredictable secretary (“Oh, is she conniving,” said Paulsen) who works for the unpredictable (and oft-conniving) Adam.

A wealthy European who’s also got a sense of humor.

A sexy, blue-collar detective--described as a combo of Columbo and Serpico.

In case you’re wondering about that detective, consider Paulsen’s promise that, among other things, the new season, “will have a mystery involving some things that happened in Alexis and Blake’s past.”

It’s no mystery that “Dynasty” needs to do something . The top-rated show of ‘84-’85 was rated 41st this past season. Whoops!
