A 42-year-old man was killed early Saturday after he stepped into the path of a car, Santa Ana police said.

Rene Lugo of Santa Ana died at the scene of massive head injuries, Sgt. Joe Esther said.

A couple of minutes after midnight, Lugo and three other people were about to cross the street to go to a convenience store at the corner of Warner and Cypress avenues, but one of the pedestrians saw a car approaching and said they should wait, police said.

However, Lugo attempted to cross Warner, walking slightly outside the intersection, police said. Lugo was struck by the eastbound vehicle, a Honda Civic, police said.

The driver was treated for minor cuts at Coastal Communities Hospital and released. He apparently was not speeding when the accident occurred, police said.
