The St. Louis Cardinals have agreed to terms with former Kansas City Royals bullpen ace Dan Quisenberry.
Dal Maxvill, Cardinals general manager, said in a news release that Quisenberry, 35, would join the Cardinals for their game Thursday against the San Diego Padres in St. Louis.
Quisenberry, who has 238 career saves, is tied with Sparky Lyle for fourth place on the all-time list. He has a 51-43 record with a 2.55 earned-run average. This season, however, he was 0-1 with 1 save and a 3.55 ERA before the Royals released him on July 4.
Manager Whitey Herzog, in Cincinnati to manage the National League All Stars, has been searching for a middle relief pitcher who can appear in advance of Todd Worrell and Ken Dayley.
