A Chinese domestic airliner carrying 173 people wound up stuck in a rice paddy just beyond the runway at Jiujiang airport in eastern Jiangxi province when it ran short of fuel and was forced to make an emergency landing, the official Guangming Daily said. None of the 162 passengers, including 100 foreigners, or the 11 crew members were injured in the landing Monday evening, the newspaper added. It said that the pilot made a successful landing but could not stop in time and ran off the runway into the paddy. According to the newspaper, the runway is not designed to handle planes as large as the Soviet-designed TU-154. The plane was flying from Canton to Shanghai when it ran into bad weather, the report added.
