Jim Abbott, the one-handed pitcher who was the top selection of the Angels in the recent amateur baseball draft, was named the Jesse Owens Big Ten Athlete of the Year, the conference announced. Abbott is the first athlete from the University of Michigan and the first baseball player to receive the award.
