Forty Niner, running in his first race since finishing seventh May 21 in the Preakness, set a track record of 1:33 4/5 for the mile in winning a $30,000 allowance race at Monmouth Park in New Jersey.
Forty Niner, trained by Woody Stephens, won by 7 lengths over Slew City Slew in the race, a prep for the $500,000 Haskell Invitational July 30. The 1-5 favorite paid $2.60, $2.20 and $2.10.
