Whittier : Society Picks Design House

Share

The Whittier Historical Society will direct the restoration and refurbishing of an earthquake-damaged home as a fund-raising project. The Smullins-Bailey House on Painter Avenue has been selected as the city’s Design House for 1989. Architects and interior designers will donate their services for the project, expected to be completed in April, 1989.

Built by William and Anna Smullins, the 1916 English country-style home was later occupied by Robert and Catherine Bailey, descendants of Whittier pioneers Jonathan and Rebecca Bailey.

The house sustained substantial damage in the Oct. 1 earthquake and is now up on blocks. The current owners of the home, Dennis and Patty Thomas, will allow tours of the house for one month after the restoration is finished. The Thomases will then reoccupy the home.
