A fire will strike the Redondo Beach Pier again today but will do no further damage. This time the massive flames and thick, black smoke will be a video replay of the May 27 blaze.

The blaze destroyed 15 businesses, about 34,000 square feet of the wooden and concrete pier and caused $7 million damage in public and private property.

The video, which was taken by the Fire Department, will be shown between 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. today at a booth in the “Survivors’ Village,” a section of canopied booths set up near the entrance to the pier by merchants whose businesses were destroyed by the fire.

Photos and news clippings relating to the fire also will be displayed at the booth, which is part of a fund-raising drive for the pier’s reconstruction, said Jim Graham, spokesman for the Harbor Department.

The city has raised $800 in private contributions and will place donation cans in businesses throughout the city this week, city officials said. City officials estimate it will cost up to $7 million to replace the pier.
