Glendora Tourney to Lure 800 Netters

More than 800 of the top amateur tennis players in the nation will compete in the 27th annual Glendora Tennis Championships Saturday through Aug. 7 at Glendora High School.

Among the favorites in the men’s open division is Mitchell Bridge of Fountain Valley, who reached the finals last year. Other top contenders include Craig Johnson of Pepperdine University, Eric Peus of Stanford and Andy Olyphant of USC.

In the women’s open division, defending champion Helen Park-Bates is considered the favorite. She figures to receive strong challenges from Debbie Strombeck of Santa Ana, Carolyn Reed of Escondido and Pam Ridgeley of Bakersfield.

There will be $2,000 in prize money for the winners of the open divisions.

Many of the top juniors, 18 and younger, will also be playing. Arcadia’s Jennifer Wall is the top seed in the girls-16-and-younger division.
