A Michigan workers’ compensation magistrate ruled that Billy Sims, former Detroit Lions running back, is entitled to collect $17,363 a year in tax-free disability benefits from the Lions for a 1984 injury to his right knee.
Mary Susan Connolly ruled that Sims, who retired in 1986, is entitled to the benefits even though he collected a $1-million bonus and $70,000 severance pay from the team as well as being paid deferred compensation and private disability insurance benefits, and earning “substantial investment income.”
