All But One Seeded Player Wins in Boys’ Tennis

Glenn Weiner of Long Beach was the only seeded player to lose in the opening round of the U.S. Tennis Assn. Boys’ National 12-and-under Championships at Morley Field.

Unseeded Bill Gluck of St. Louis defeated No. 3 Weiner, 6-4, 6-0, to advance. The remaining 15 seeds will play in today’s second round of 64 players, beginning at 9:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. Other matches will be played at Folsom’s Tennis Center.

San Diego-area players, Justin Phillips of Rancho Santa Fe, Vo Chu of San Diego, Taryn Burgk of Del Mar and Andre Hesselink of La Jolla did not advance. Scott Lippitt of Rancho Santa Fe moved to today’s round when his opponent withdrew from the competition.

The tournament’s No. 1 seed, Scott Humphries of Greely, Colo., defeated Vo, 6-0, 6-1. The No. 2 seed, B.J. Stearns of Seminole, Fla., defeated Kevin Cohen of Los Angeles, 6-0, 6-0.

The fourth seeded Ry Tarpley of Milton, Mass., defeated Fritz Gildemeister of Durham, N.C., 6-1, 6-2. Marcus Fluitt of Miami, the No. 5 seed, defeated J.R. Chidley, 10, of Riverside, 6-2, 6-2.

Joshua Hausman of Waban, Maine, the No. 6 seed, defeated Burgk, 6-0, 6-0. Seventh-seeded Brian Getz of Coral Springs, Fla., defeated Joseph McCauley of Phoenix, 6-1, 6-2. Eighth seeded Paul Goldstein of Rockville, Md., defeated Mike Takao of San Antonio, Texas, 6-3, 6-0.

YACHTING

Co-skippers Peter Peckham and Jim Hervey of the San Diego Yacht Club successfully defended their title in the 53rd annual PC National Championships at the San Diego Yacht Club.

The boats in this class of racing are of 1930s vintage, are 32 feet long and 6 1/2 feet wide.

Peckham and Hervey, sailing Confusion, won the five-race competition held over three days, with 10 1/2 points. Bud Caldwell and Morgan Miller, of the San Diego Yacht Club, co-skippering Onion Truck, finished second with 12 3/4 points.

Finishing third was Bruce Gresham, of the San Diego Yacht Club, sailing Jade, with 20 3/4 points. Chaos, sailed by Joe Gann of the San Diego Yacht Club, was fourth with 22 points and Alex Von Wetter in La Cucaracha, was fifth with 23 3/4 points.
