Local News in Brief : Night Controlled Burn Targets Valencia Site

Share

The Los Angeles County Fire Department will conduct a controlled burn tonight south of Pico Canyon Road in Valencia.

The fire, expected to burn about 100 acres of brush between 8 p.m. and midnight, is the second controlled burn to be held at night this summer under an experimental firefighting program, Capt. Scott Franklin said. The fire will be set about 1 1/2 miles east of the Golden State Freeway and should be visible from Pico Canyon Road, he said.

Franklin said the department is experimenting with night controlled burns because blazes started after dusk often are easier to control than daytime fires because moisture at night prevents flames from spreading rapidly, he said. Night burns also free fire crews to fight brush fires during the day.

A controlled burn conducted one night in July consumed about 150 acres in Agoura, Franklin said.
