New Sail to Arrive a Day Late
The arrival of the new wing-sail for Stars & Stripes, the American entry in the upcoming America’s Cup competition, has been rescheduled for today because of a transportation problem.
The wing-sail was completed by noon Wednesday at the Stars & Stripes design site in the Mojave Desert and was scheduled to arrive in San Diego later in the day.
It was decided that transportation of the 109-foot wing-sail during rush hour would be ill-advised, said Sail America media spokeswoman Barbara Schwartz. The sail will be 104 feet above the boat, 19 feet higher than the catamaran’s original wing-sail.

Three San Diego-area players were eliminated from U.S. Tennis Assn. national age-group tournaments.
Unseeded Scott Lippitt of Rancho Santa Fe lost to No. 7 Paul Goldstein of Rockville, Md., 6-2, 6-2, in a boys’ 12s match at Balboa Park.
Top-seeded Scott Humphries of Greeley, Colo., and second-seeded B.J. Stearns of Seminole, Fla., advanced to the round of 16 in the tournament at Morley Field.
Angelica Gavaldon of Coronado served twice for match point but could not put it away, losing to No. 2 Christine Neuman of Downers Grove, Ill., in the girls’ 16s championships at Charleston, W.Va. Gavaldon, seeded 11th, lost, 1-6, 6-4, 7-6, in the round of 16.
No. 12 Marco Zuniga of Chula Vista was eliminated by unseeded Vimal Patel, 7-6, 6-0, in the boys’ 16s at Kalamazoo, Mich.
CYCLING
Denise Mueller of Encinitas won the first of three events for girls ages 12 to 14 at the Junior Cycling Championships at Trexlertown, Pa.
