2 Killed, 14 Injured in Hit-Run Traffic Accident Near Ramona

Two people were killed and 14 others injured Wednesday afternoon in a four-vehicle, head-on accident on California 67 near Ramona, authorities said.

The accident, which occurred at 4:28 p.m. at California 67 and Rancho de Oro Road, caused the road to be closed for more than two hours, said the California Highway Patrol.

The identities of the dead and injured were not immediately available, and details of the accident remained sketchy Wednesday night. At least six of the injured were children, hospitals reported.

The accident occurred when a northbound car crossed the divider line for unknown reasons and collided with an oncoming vehicle, triggering a chain-reaction accident involving two other vehicles, said a CHP spokeswoman.

Driver Flees Scene

The northbound car fled, and authorities are seeking its driver, who is considered a hit-and-run suspect, the CHP spokeswoman said.

Two Life Flight helicopters and four ambulances went to the crash scene. The injured were taken to various hospitals; their conditions were not all immediately available.

Four survivors, all children, were in stable condition at Palomar Memorial Hospital, a spokeswoman said. Another victim, 8, was in stable condition at Mercy Hospital, a spokeswoman said.

A 3-year-old was treated at Scripps Memorial Hospital-La Jolla and released, a spokeswoman said.

A 31-year-old was in stable condition at Scripps.
