Cal State Fullerton Roundup : Speltz Expected Back This Week

Cal State Fullerton quarterback Dan Speltz, who was hospitalized Monday with a foot infection, was released Tuesday morning and is expected to resume practicing this week, Titan Coach Gene Murphy said Tuesday.

Jerry Lloyd, Fullerton trainer, said Speltz has an infection in the area of his left Achilles’ tendon. The infection was spreading, Lloyd said, and Speltz was admitted to St. Jude Hospital with a high white-blood cell count.

“Fortunately for him and for us, we caught it early enough,” Lloyd said. “He’ll probably return Thursday or Friday, although it may be longer. His body is still fighting the infection and he needs recovery time.”

Speltz, who led El Camino College to an undefeated season last year, has won the Titans’ starting job from veterans Tony Dill and Carlos Siragusa.

The Titans ended their preseason camp early Tuesday, canceling practice in part because a large number of players have minor injuries or the flu.

“We have 26 players with some type of injury,” Murphy said.

The Titans previously had been given most of Wednesday off in order to move out of dormitory rooms at Pacific Coast Christian College, where they are housed during training camp.

Former La Quinta High School player Tom Holler, a 6-foot 2-inch, 260-pound junior offensive lineman who was to have been a key backup on the Titans’ inexperienced offensive line, has been advised to end his playing career because of a spinal-cord condition.

Ron Fremont, assistant sports information director at Cal State Fullerton the past four years, has resigned and is expected to be named sports information director at Cal Poly Pomona.

Fremont worked as an assistant sports information director at UCLA and at Cal Poly Pomona before going to Fullerton.
