A Northwest Airlines flight en route from Seattle to Detroit landed in Salt Lake City after fumes from an empty gasoline can filled the cabin. A West German tourist took the can aboard as carry-on luggage and “during compression and decompression, the vapors emitted into the cabin area,” Salt Lake FBI Agent Cal Clegg said. The tourist had rented a car, run out of gas and purchased the can, which he decided to keep. Clegg said he was not sure how the gas can got past security guards in Seattle.
