Davis’ Triple, Homer Spark Reds’ Win, 6-5

Associated Press

Eric Davis drove in three runs, two with his 25th homer, to lead the Cincinnati Reds to a 6-5 victory over the Chicago Cubs Friday.

Davis’ tie-breaking triple down the right-field line highlighed a four-run fifth-inning rally off loser Jeff Pico, 5-7. The game-winning run-batted in was Davis’ 18th, tops in the National League and the top single-season total in team history.

Tom Browning, 14-5, won for the sixth time in seven decisions despite allowing 12 hits, including Ryne Sandberg’s two-run homer, before leaving for a pinch-hitter in the sixth.

John Franco, the fourth Cincinnati pitcher, got the last three outs for his 30th save.

Trailing 3-2, the Reds rallied with two out in the fifth. Chris Sabo doubled and Daniels’ RBI single tied the game. Davis then tripled on an 0-2 pitch, scoring Daniels.

Paul O’Neill’s infield hit scored Davis. O’Neill went to second on a wild pitch and scored on Herm Winningham’s single.

Daniels’ two-out single and Davis’ opposite-field homer to right gave the Reds a 2-0 first-inning lead, but the Cubs tied the game in the bottom of the inning when rookie Doug Dascenzo led off with a single in his first major league at-bat and scored on Sandberg’s 16th homer.

Dascenzo had two singles and a double in his first three major league at bats and scored the Cubs’ third run on Sandberg’s fourth-inning single.
