The Assault (Z Tuesday at at 10:30 p.m.): Directed by the esteemed Fons Rademakers, this 1986 best foreign film Oscar winner represents an attempt to confront Holland’s wartime experience--at once a time of suffering and courage, cowardice and shame--under German Occupation. A complex, epic-scale and utterly absorbing film. (2:28)

Studs Lonigan (A&E; Wednesday at noon): A real collector’s item. Irving Lerner’s respected 1960 adaptation of the James T. Farrell novel, with Christopher Knight in the title role. Veteran character actor Dick Foran plays Studs’ father, and Jack Nicholson has a small role as one of Studs’ pals. (2:00)
