Graf, Gabriela Advance in Open

NEW YORK —
Steffi Graf moved within two victories of the Grand Slam today, eliminating 14th-seeded Katerina Maleeva 6-3, 6-0 and advancing to the semifinals of the U.S. Open.
Also advancing to the semifinals was fifth-seeded Gabriela Sabatini, who survived a scare from No. 16 Larisa Savchenko of the Soviet Union, triumphing 4-6, 6-4, 6-1. The Argentinian is the only player to beat Graf this year, winning two of three meetings.
