A newlywed who disappeared with her husband for nearly four months, seeking “perfect love” but sparking a nationwide search that ended in San Diego, is in serious condition today after an auto accident.

Loyola University Medical Center would not provide details of Carolyn MacLean Swanson’s injuries. But her husband, Scott, 23, told the Chicago Tribune “It looked like it could be serious two or three hours ago, but now it looks like she’s just fine.”

A TV station reported that Mrs. Swanson, 22, was injured in a two-car collision in suburban Wheaton. The other car was driven by a 16-year-old girl.

The Swansons, once students at Wheaton College, a private Christian school, eloped and were secretly married a week before they disappeared April 2. Their ransacked luxury auto was found in an alley in downtown Chicago, leading to fears of foul play. They turned up July 27 in San Diego, where they said they had been living under assumed names, trying to enjoy “perfect love.”
