The Philadelphia Phillies have informed third baseman Mike Schmidt that they will not pick up the option on the second year of his $2.25-million contract. Schmidt, 38, underwent arthroscopic surgery Wednesday for a torn rotator cuff in his right shoulder. He is expected to recuperate in time for spring training, and the Phillies said they hoped to negotiate a new contract with him.
Schmidt, who finished this season batting .249 with 12 home runs and 62 RBIs, said he wants to play just one more season.
