Mike Mayweather rushed for 135 yards and a touchdown and Keith Walker kicked 3 first-half field goals as Army surprised Holy Cross, 23-3, Saturday at West Point, N.Y., to break the Crusaders’ 12-game winning streak.

Holy Cross (1-1) entered the game ranked No. 1 in Division I-AA, but the Army defense stopped senior quarterback Jeff Wiley and his powerful passing attack to give Jim Young the 100th victory of his coaching career.

Holy Cross had beaten Army twice in a row, including 34-24 last year, but had never faced sophomore quarterback Otto Leone, who has become something of a hero at West Point. Last season, he came off the bench and led the Cadets to an upset of Temple, completing his lone pass of the game for 64 yards and the winning touchdown.

Leone, playing in only his fourth game, nearly duplicated that feat Saturday, when he replaced Mark Mooney with 4:52 to play in the first half and connected with Sean Jordan on a 68-yarder to put Army up, 23-3. The Cadets took a 16-3 lead on their first drive of the second half, moving 86 yards in 16 plays, with Mayweather scoring on a 3-yard run.

Alabama 37, Temple 0--Bobby Humphrey, showing no apparent side effects from two serious off-season injuries, ran for 91 yards and scored a touchdown as the 14th-ranked Crimson Tide opened their season with the impressive victory at Philadelphia.

Humphrey, who suffered a stress fracture of his left foot in April and a broken jaw in July, ran 8 yards in the first quarter for his 38th career touchdown, tying the Alabama career record set by Johnny Musso.

The Tide led only 10-0 at halftime, but blew the game open after Gene Jelks returned the second-half kickoff 96 yards for a touchdown.

The Alabama defense, led by nose tackle Derrick Thomas, had four sacks, recovered two fumbles and intercepted a pass as the Tide handed winless Temple its second defeat of the season.

Navy 30, Delaware 3--Gary McIntosh threw a 34-yard touchdown pass and ran for another score at Annapolis, Md., to give the Midshipmen a 2-0 record and their best start since 1981.

Navy also got a touchdown run from starting quarterback Alton Grizzard, who gained 76 yards in 16 carries.

Before the game, Naval Academy officials introduced the 1963 Cotton Bowl championship team. Quarterback Roger Staubach was passed from the field into the stands over the shoulders of Midshipmen.

Boston College 41, Cincinnati 7--Quarterback Mark Kamphaus and split end Tom Waddle connected on a pair of touchdowns to lead the Eagles, coming off a season-opening loss to USC, at Chestnut Hill, Mass.

Kamphaus, who divided the quarterbacking duties in the opener last week, completed 19 of 31 passes for 248 yards. He hit Waddle on scoring passes of 10 and 8 yards as the Eagles built leads of 14-0 in the first quarter and 31-7 at halftime.

Tailback Jim Bell scored on a 2-yard run, fullback Duke St. Pierre added an 8-yard scoring run and Tracy Giles had a 14-yard run for the other BC scores.

Waddle had 6 receptions for 73 yards, while flanker Marcus Cherry caught 6 for 100 yards.

New Hampshire 21, Colgate 7--Bob Jean threw two touchdown passes to Chris Braune and tailback Norm Ford added a 56-yard scoring run in the win at Hamilton, N.Y.
