Graf Didn’t Deserve Slam After Scoring Slam
I take exception to Lisa Dillman’s unnecessarily cruel criticism of Steffi Graf’s poised and mature reaction upon her completion of a Grand Slam. Graf was compassionate enough to say of her worthy opponent, Gabriela Sabatini: “The third set, she got tired.”
Graf wisely said she needed time to reflect on the impact of this extraordinary achievement. Enough of show-biz in sports! Enough of Connors and “Nasty” and “Mac” and their unsporting, even obscene gestures and comments. That sort of performance belongs in the comedy clubs. Joan Rivers et al do it better.
