Pacific 10 Roundup : Scoring Late, Oregon Makes Early Run for Lead, 7-3

Latin Berry scored on a 3-yard run in the fourth quarter Saturday to lift Oregon to a 7-3 victory over Stanford in a Pacific 10 Conference game at Eugene, Ore.

In a tough defensive battle, undefeated Oregon (3-0 overall, 2-0 in the conference) took advantage of one of Stanford’s few mistakes.

With Stanford (1-2, 0-2) leading, 3-0, early in the fourth quarter, Oregon linebacker Scott Kozak intercepted a pass by quarterback Brian Johnson that was tipped by one of the Ducks’ defensive linemen.

Oregon quarterback Bill Musgrave passed to wide receiver Sam Archer for 25 yards to the Stanford 18-yard line, then connected with tight end Joe Meerten for 10 yards on third and 5 to set up Berry’s run with 9 minutes remaining.

Kozak also recovered a fumble late in the third quarter to stop a Stanford drive at the Oregon 35.

On the next series, Stanford stopped Oregon on fourth and 1 at the Cardinal 3-yard line when Musgrave pitched the ball out of bounds on an option play.

Oregon’s Kirk Dennis missed field-goal attempts of 35 yards in the second quarter and 53 yards in the third quarter.

Stanford’s John Hopkins opened the scoring with 6:35 left in the first half with a 51-yard field goal.

Hopkins missed from 53 yards as time expired in the first half.

Washington 35, San Jose State 31--Tony Covington ran 2 yards for a touchdown with 1:31 left at Seattle to lift the Huskies to a victory over the Spartans.

The Spartans (1-3) overcame a 28-0 halftime deficit and took a 31-28 lead on Jim Kirk’s 34-yard field goal with 4:08 left.

Cary Conklin led the Huskies’ final 80-yard drive with passes of 32 and 25 yard to Brian Slater, who had 6 catches for 145 yards.

“I’m not sure there’s anybody left on the schedule that we can beat if we keep playing like that,” Washington Coach Don James said.

Johnny Johnson sparked the Spartans’ rally by scoring 2 touchdowns and rushing for 217 yards in 24 carries.

Ken Lutz completed 17 of 28 pass attempts for for 195 yards and 3 touchdowns. Johnson, a 6-foot-3 junior, caught 6 passes for 70 yards.

A 27-yard touchdown pass from Lutz to Johnson in third quarter and a 21-yard scoring pass from Lutz to Doug Hooker with 7 seconds gone in the fourth quarter tied the score, 28-28.

Conklin completed 14 of 25 passes for 241 yards and 2 touchdowns, while Vince Weathersby had 74 rushing yards in 11 carries for the Huskies.

San Jose State had 462 yards of offense and Washington had 419.

Washington cruised to a 28-0 lead midway through the second quarter but the Spartans scored on Johnson’s 64-yard run and a 2-yard pass from Lutz to Kevin Evans with 48 seconds left in the half to make it 28-14.

Johnson, who had 129 yards in the first half, had the second-best day ever for a San Jose State runner with 217 yards. Charlie Harraway had 227 yards in 1965 against Montana State.

California 52, Kansas 21--Troy Taylor threw for 281 yards and 3 touchdowns to lead the Bears past the Jayhawks in an intersectional game at Berkeley.

Taylor completed 27 of 36 passes as the Bears (2-1) erupted for 38 points in the second half after Kansas (0-3) went ahead, 21-14, on a 62-yard pass play from Kelly Donahue to Willie Vaughn early in the third quarter.

Taylor’s touchdowns covered 12 and 20 yards to Junior Tagaloa and 2 yards to Darryl Ingram. Chris Richards rushed for 101 yards and touchdowns of 77 and 4 yards for Cal.

Kansas (0-3) was outgained, 277 yards to 140, in the first half but managed a 14-14 tie by intercepting 3 of Taylor passes. Cornerback Peda Samuel returned an interception 65 yards for a touchdown on the third play of the game to give Kansas a 7-0 lead.

California had a 574-298 edge in total yards, with Todd Powers catching 11 passes for 81 yards.

Colorado 28, Oregon State 21--Eric Bieniemy ran for 211 yards and 3 touchdowns and the Buffaloes got off to their best start in a decade by turning back the Beavers at Boulder, Colo.

Bieniemy, who has topped 100 yards in each of Colorado’s first three games, scored on runs of 45, 4 and 66 yards for Colorado (3-0), which last won its first three games in 1978.

Bieniemy’s final touchdown with 9:16 left put Colorado ahead, 22-21, after Brian Swanson’s 1-yard touchdown run gave Oregon State its first lead, 21-16, with 11:04 left.

Sal Aunese added an 11-yard touchdown run on the last play of the game to pad the final margin. The Colorado quarterback completed 6 of 9 passes for 190 yards and rushed for 66 yards.

Oregon State rallied from a 16-7 halfime deficit behind Erik Wilhelm, who completed 27 of 38 passes for 353 yards and 2 touchdowns. Wilhelm’s 24-yard scoring toss to Robb Thomas with 9:31 left in the third quarter cut Colorado’s lead to 16-14.
