Big Ten Roundup : Buckeyes Battle Back to Stun LSU

Greg Frey passed 20 yards to Bobby Olive for the game-winning touchdown with 38 seconds remaining and Ohio State upset No. 7 LSU, 36-33, at Columbus, Ohio, Saturday before 90,584, the second largest crowd ever at Ohio Stadium.

Frey completed 24 of 37 passes for 281 yards and 2 touchdowns as Ohio State (2-1) came back from a 13-point deficit with less than 2 minutes left.

LSU (2-1) went ahead, 33-20, with 4:29 remaining when a pass from Tommy Hodson to Tony Moss was tipped into the hands of teammate Alvin Lee, who completed a 55-yard touchdown play.

But the Buckeyes came back on a 5-yard touchdown run by Carlos Snow with 1:56 left, then held LSU on downs. LSU elected to take a safety with 1:34 remaining, cutting the lead to 33-29.

The Tigers punted on the ensuing free kick, with Olive returning the kick 32 yards to the LSU 38.

Frey completed 2 passes for 18 yards. On third and 7, the sophomore quarterback hit Olive over the middle and he dove into the end zone.

The defeat put an end to LSU’s string of 14 straight road victories.

Snow had 90 yards in 21 carries and 2 touchdowns to lead Ohio State, which rushed for 93 yards. The sophomore also had 5 catches for 41 yards.

Snow started in place of Vince Workman, Ohio State’s leading rusher the last two seasons, who was declared ineligible earlier in the week for accepting money from and signing with agent Dave Lueddekke.

Hodson completed 20 of 39 passes for 299 yards and 2 touchdowns.

LSU’s David Browndyke kicked field goals of 36, 27, 35 and 20 yards.

Florida St. 30, Michigan St. 7--Safety Leroy Butler returned an interception 26 yards for a touchdown and had 3 punt returns for 75 yards to help lift the No. 9 Seminoles (3-1) over the Spartans (0-3) at Tallahassee, Fla.

The Seminoles also scored on a 1-yard pass by Chip Ferguson to Lawrence Dawsen, a 5-yard run by reserve Paul Moore after a late fourth-quarter blocked punt, and a 21-yard field goal by Bill Mason.

The game marked the first visit by a Big 10 team at Doak S. Campbell Stadium. The attendance of 61,757, third-largest home crowd in Florida State history.

Michigan 19, Wake Forest 9--Tony Boles rushed for 213 yards and 2 touchdowns, leading No. 19 Michigan at Ann Arbor, Mich.

It was the first victory for Michigan after losses to Notre Dame and top-ranked Miami. Wake Forest is 2-2.

Boles scored on runs of 14 and 29 yards in a 3:23 span of the second quarter as the Wolverines took a 14-3 halftime lead.

Michigan added a third-quarter safety when Wake Forest tailback Mike Young fumbled a pitchout out of the end zone. Mike Gillette kicked a 19-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter to make it 19-3.

Missouri 28, Indiana 28--Jeff Jacke’s 22-yard field-goal attempt with 4 seconds remaining hit the left upright and Missouri had to settle for a tie at Columbia, Mo.

John Stollenwerck, on fourth and 4, combined with Michael Jones on a 33-yard touchdown pass play to tie the score with 4:37 left.

The Tigers (1-1-1) then forced an Indiana punt and moved downfield with Craig Lammers and Chris Hall getting long gains to set up Jacke’s attempt. The snap was clean but the ball slammed into the upright.

David Schnell and Anthony Thompson scored two touchdowns each for the Hoosiers (2-0-1), who overcame a 21-7 deficit to take a 28-21 lead with 8:35 left.

Iowa 10, Iowa State 3--Tony Stewart ran for 194 yards and caught a Chuck Hartlieb pass for the game’s only touchdown as Iowa struggled past Iowa State at Iowa City.

Iowa (2-2) was a 24-point favorite.

Iowa State (1-2) nearly tied the game when quarterback Bret Oberg, who passed for 238 yards, connected with Eddie Brown on a 50-yard play to the Iowa 11 with 32 seconds remaining. But Tork Hook intercepted Oberg’s pass 2 plays later with 16 seconds left and Iowa held on.

Stewart carried 32 times and caught 3 passes for 30 yards, including a 26-yarder from Hartlieb with 6:06 left in the third quarter.

Army 23, Northwestern 7--Calvin Cass rushed for 142 yards and 2 touchdowns in leading the Cadets at West Point, N.Y.

Army (2-1) took advantage of a pass interception and a fumble early in the third quarter to overcome a 7-3 halftime deficit and beat the Wildcats (0-3).

Army’s Mike Thorson intercepted Greg Bradshaw’s first pass of the second half at the Northwestern 35. John Barth ran 48 yards up the middle on the next play and Cass scored 6 plays later. Minnesota 31, No. Illinois 20--Chris Gaiters returned a punt 79 yards for a touchdown and caught the go-ahead touchdown pass as the Gophers came from behind to beat Northern Illinois in a nonconference game at Minneapolis.

Gaiters’ 3-yard touchdown reception from backup quarterback Scott Schaffner with 5:44 left in the fourth quarter came after the ball bounced high off a defender’s hands and Gaiters managed to keep his feet in bounds while pulling it down in the back of the end zone.

Minnesota (2-1) added a touchdown with 48 seconds left on a 2-yard plunge by Schaffner.

Northern Illinois (3-1) led 17-10 in the third quarter and 20-17 in the third.
