Late Goal Earns Point Loma a Tie in Men’s Soccer

The Point Loma Nazarene men’s soccer team hurt itself with penalties Saturday but scored a goal in the second overtime period to salvage a 2-2 tie against visiting Grand Canyon College.
Point Loma (6-2-1) got on the board early when Andy Strandberg stole a pass and scored 20 seconds into the match. Grand Canyon’s Martin Biles tied the score on an indirect kick early in the second half. Regulation ended in 1-1 tie.
In the first minute of the first overtime period, Dan Warden put Grand Canyon on top, 2-1, with a penalty kick. Point Loma tied the score eight minutes into the second overtime on a goal by J.C. Alvarez.
VOLLEYBALL
Rachel Vetter led the UC San Diego women to a 15-2, 15-8, 15-7 nonleague victory against host Cal State Dominguez Hills. The Division III Tritons improved to 21-4, and Division II Cal State Dominguez Hills dropped to 3-9.
GOLF
The Dr. Charles E. Weber-Scripps Memorial Invitational golf tournament will be held Monday at the La Jolla Country Club.
Steve Garvey and musician Bob Crosby are expected to attend the event in which Dr. Kenneth Blanchard, co-author of “The One Minute Manager,” will speak.
The tournament is open to golfers with an established handicap. Registration will be held Monday from 9 to 11 a.m.
