Two men were killed when their single-engine plane crashed in a steep canyon near Rancho Cucamonga, the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department reported after a helicopter rescue crew was able to reach the wreckage. Civil Air Patrol Maj. Gordon Barnett identified the pilot of the Beechcraft Sierra as Ted Cummings and the passenger as Dave Thomas. He said both men were believed to have lived in the Cucamonga area. The plane was being used for touch-and-go landing practice at Cable Airport in Upland when it disappeared. It was found 10 miles north of the airport.
