Hershiser, Drysdale Are Two Good Sports

The fantastic scoreless-inning record of Orel Hershiser is only exceeded by the graciousness with which he approached his likely naming to the Cy Young Award and his probable selection someday to the Hall of Fame.

Hershiser considered asking to be lifted from the game so that he would only tie, not surpass, Don Drysdale’s record. He said he was not nearly as good a pitcher as Drysdale had been.

Thus I recommend that baseball begin an Orel Hershiser Award for sportsmanship. Judging by the way Dodger announcer Don Drysdale handled the destruction of his 20-year-old record, the first recipient should be Don Drysdale.
