Cleveland Fails to Impress Despite Stopping Chatsworth

Purists of the game of football might want to get a copy of the film from Cleveland’s 21-0 dismantling of Chatsworth Friday night at Chatsworth in a Northwest Valley Conference game.

Not so they can view classic execution, brilliantly thrown passes and perfect blocking schemes.

Rather, they might want to get a copy of the film so they can destroy it.

In a game colored yellow with flags from the 14 penalties committed by both sides, the Cavaliers were able to rise above, however briefly, the shoddy level of play that dominated the game and raise their record to 2-2.

“I thought it was sloppy,” Cleveland Coach Steve Landress said. “I didn’t think we would have so many problems executing.”

Ah, but in the end, a win is a win is a win.

And the Cavalier win was somewhat in doubt until 2 late fourth-quarter touchdown runs by Pat Bryant and Mark Mooney pushed Cleveland from a tenuous 7-0 halftime lead to the final score.

The Cavaliers were bolstered by a punishing ground game, amassing 275 yards against a rather generous Chancellor defense. Sean Burwell led the rushing attack with 127 yards in 17 carries.

And Chatsworth’s offense? Well, they have really nice uniforms. But they looked less than impressive in scraping together 96 total yards. Still, they weren’t out of the game until the late scores from Cleveland.

Cleveland’s second-quarter touchdown, the only score of the first half, was engineered by the opportunistic passing of quarterback Lee Gatewood.
