Raid on Church Underscores Intrusiveness of INS Actions

This concerns the Immigration and Naturalization Service raid inside La Purisima Church in the El Modena area of Orange on Sept. 27 while parishioners were worshipping Christ: If Mayor Jess F. Perez does not come to the aid of these defenseless people, then he is as guilty as the INS officials who were responsible for the wanton disregard of respect toward a holy sanctuary where immigrants come for God’s protection.

There is danger and opportunity in a crisis. Mayor Perez should take the leadership and protect us from the wanton intrusion by the Immigration and Naturalization Service in our Latino communities. I suggest that the mayor meditate and come to terms with his conscience or forever hold his peace.
