Lewis Says Suspension of Johnson Helps Sport

Olympic gold medalists Carl Lewis and Florence Griffith Joyner scored easy victories in a track and field meet at Tokyo, and Lewis said he thought the suspension of Ben Johnson for drug use will help improve the sport.

“When we go back, we not only have to talk about the drug situation, we have to fight it,” Lewis said. “We have to advance the sport, and advancing the sport only comes by fighting things that are detrimental to it.”

Lewis won the 100 meters on a wet track in 10.09 seconds. Griffith Joyner won the women’s 100 in 10.91, with Evelyn Ashford second in 11.14.

Griffith Joyner was wearing a shocking pink one-legged outfit with a shimmering black bikini bottom.

Both Lewis and Griffith Joyner were greeted like rock stars by the crowd of 35,000, which endured five hours of driving rain.
