A former gang member who was among a group of youths who chased down a purse snatcher and stomped him to death has been sentenced to seven years in state prison.

Superior Court Judge Alexander Williams imposed the sentence on Gregory George Sanders, 20, who pleaded no contest last month to voluntary manslaughter. One year of the sentence was for an unrelated robbery.

Deputy Dist. Atty. Stanley Williams said Sanders and a 17-year-old youth fatally beat, stomped and kicked Derek Pillares, 28, in an elementary school parking lot in South-Central Los Angeles in April, 1987. Two groups of youths chased Pillares down after he grabbed the purse of a 67-year-old woman outside a store.
