A former volunteer firefighter in neighboring Jefferson has admitted setting about 17 of the more than 20 arson fires that have plagued the area since May, prosecutors said Friday.

Lance Lalumiere, 23, a restaurant dishwasher, was charged Wednesday with setting one fire and state police said they planned to seek indictments charging him with setting 15 others.

Jefferson, population 850, has had 21 suspicious fires since May. Nearby towns have had at least three other fires, including one Oct. 3 in Dalton for which a second suspect was charged Thursday.
