Aztecs Beat No. 10 Long Beach in Volleyball

Jackie Mendez had 13 kills, 7 aces and 11 digs to lead 11th-ranked San Diego State to a 15-6, 15-12, 15-13 Big West Conference women’s volleyball victory over No. 10 Cal State Long Beach Friday night at Peterson Gym.

The Aztecs (18-3, 8-1) have won 9 consecutive matches since losing to Long Beach in the teams’ first meeting. Kim Washington added 14 kills for SDSU and Amy Erben had 12.

Cari Delson had 16 kills and Lisa Bevington 14 to lead Pepperdine to a 17-15, 15-8, 15-3 West Coast Athletic Conference victory over the University of San Diego in the USD Sports Center. Angie Rais had 14 kills to lead USD (5-10, 1-3). Pepperdine is 6-10, 4-0.

Rachel Vetter had 18 kills and Dee Dee Bigelow added 13 to lead UC San Diego (24-5) past William and Mary, 16-14, 13-15, 15-12, 10-15, 15-9, in a nonconference match at UCSD.

FOOTBALL

Defensive safety Ron Dean, a junior from Chula Vista, has been temporarily suspended from the Wyoming football team and will not play in today’s game against New Mexico, Coach Paul Roach said Friday.

“Dean has been temporarily suspended pending clarification of an alleged misconduct,” Roach said.

Roach would not detail the allegations regarding Dean.

Dean, who transferred to Wyoming from Southwestern Community College a year ago, has played in five of the Cowboys’ first six games and has had 18 tackles, 3 interceptions and 3 fumble recoveries.

MENS’ SOCCER

Eric Wynalda scored twice in the second half, and Kyle Whittemore scored once to lead San Diego State past Cal State San Bernardino, 3-0, in a nonconference match at Aztec Bowl. Curtis McAlister had two saves to record the shutout for SDSU (11-2-1). Cal State San Bernardino is 7-6-1.

Mike Bradley scored on a penalty kick 44 seconds into the game to start UC San Diego to a 3-0 victory over Nazareth College of New York. Chris Hanssen and Carrick Brewster scored second-half goals for the Tritons (12-0-2), who are ranked fifth in Division III. Nazareth is 11-4-1.

Denis Langhand, Trong Ngyuen and Leo Ronces each scored a goal as the University of San Diego tied St. Mary’s, 3-3, in a West Coast Athletic Conference match. USD is 5-4-1 and 1-1-1; St. Mary’s is 6-4-3 and 1-2-1.

WOMENS’ SOCCER

Nicky Roche scored 2 goals and Jacquie Santos added another as U.S. International University defeated visiting Westmont College, 3-1, in overtime. Roche’s second goal came in overtime, and Santos’ goal clinched the victory. USIU is 5-6, Westmont College 2-10.

WATER POLO

Dave Calder scored 3 goals, but UC San Diego lost to USC, 17-11. Rob Carver led USC with 4 goals. UCSD is 10-9.
