Southland Roundup : Vegas and Occidental Run Past Pomona-Pitzer, 70-14

Kevin Vegas ran for 197 yards and 4 touchdowns in 20 carries to lead an impressive ground attack as Occidental defeated Pomona-Pitzer, 70-14, in a nonconference game Saturday night at Occidental.

Brian Neuhoff, a freshman, complemented Vegas with 124 yards and 2 touchdowns in 14 carries, and George Conahey added 103 yards and a touchdown in 14 attempts.

Occidental is 4-1. Pomona-Pitzer is 0-4.

La Verne 20, Claremont-Mudd 17--Craig Herrera, given a second chance to make good after a roughing-the-kicker penalty, kicked a 43-yard field goal with no time remaining to give the Leopards the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory at Claremont.

La Verne (1-4, 1-2) tied the game, 17-17, when quarterback Mark Brown and Anthony Brown capped an 87-yard drive with a 15-yard touchdown pass with 4:09 left. Claremont (0-5, 0-3) was unable to sustain a drive, so the Leopards got the ball back at midfield with 32 seconds to play.

Herrera missed a 48-yard field goal with 4 seconds remaining, but Claremont was called for roughing the kicker. He moved in 5 yards and connected for the victory.

UC Santa Barbara 31, Humboldt State 21--Tailback Ross Bauer rushed for 80 yards and 2 touchdowns to lead the Gauchos to the nonconference victory at Arcata, Calif.

Santa Barbara is 4-2 overall, and Humboldt is 2-4.

Santa Barbara quarterback Steve Armstrong, who replaced injured starter Mike Curtius in the first half, completed 16 of 22 passes for 135 yards and a touchdown.

Azusa Pacific 21, Redlands 5--Mario Riveros ran the opening kickoff 82 yards for a touchdown to lead the Cougars at Redlands.

Azusa Pacific is 4-1, Redlands is 2-3.

Cal Poly San Luis Obispo 42, Cal Lutheran 6--Todd Sullivan passed for 2 touchdowns to Terry Cole, one of 54 yards and the other of 75, and David Lafferty passed for two more touchdowns as the Mustangs won a Western Football Conference game at San Luis Obispo.

The Mustangs (3-3, 2-2) led at halftime, 21-0. Cal Lutheran is 2-4, 0-2.

U. San Diego 21, Whittier 6--The Toreros got touchdowns on an 8-yard pass from Doug Piper to Ken Jones, a 4-yard run by Virgil Enriquez and a 20-yard pass from Mike Hintze to Ty Barksdale en route to the nonconference victory at Whittier.

San Diego is 3-2, Whittier is 2-3.

Portland State 45, CS Northridge 13--Curtis Delgado, a 5-foot 5-inch tailback, rushed for 113 yards and 3 touchdowns in 19 carries to lead Portland State to the WFC win at Northridge.

Portland is 4-2-1 and 3-0. Northridge dropped to 5-2 and 1-2.
