Sockers Make Offer to Perez for 1988-89

Sockers Coach Ron Newman said Tuesday the Sockers have made an offer to the agent of 1987 MISL championship series MVP Hugo Perez in an attempt to secure Perez for the 1988-89 season.

Perez said at the end of last season he would not return to the Sockers, but contacted the team last month saying he had changed his mind.

“Because of the salary cap, we can’t offer him what he wants, but it’s worth a shot,” Newman said. “This is a no-lose situation. His agent (Mike Hoague) said it would be all right for us to talk to him.”

Perez, who is expected to play an outdoor game in Washington, D.C., today, wasn’t available for comment.

The Sockers also bolstered their defense Wednesday by announcing the signing of Cacho, an Argentinean who spent the past two seasons with the Kansas City Comets.
