Share

A 2-year-old girl was shot in the left leg as she played outside her apartment complex Thursday evening, but Santa Ana police had no suspects.

Sgt. John Dittus said the shooting occurred about 6 p.m. as Jessica Gomez played between two apartment buildings in the 900 block of N. Bewley St. Witnesses reported that they heard two loud popping noises, which sounded as if they came from the area east of the apartments, he said. Then the witnesses heard Jessica cry, he said.

The girl’s mother went to the child and found a bullet hole in Jessica’s left calf, police said. She was taken to the Medical Center of Garden Grove, where a spokeswoman said she was treated and released.

Dittus said police located no weapon or suspects.

The area where Jessica was playing is a courtyard not visible from the street. It is between two dwellings located behind an apartment building on Bewley Street.

“Nobody living in these two houses has a gun,” said Rafael Gonzalez, one of the residents. He added that he was watching the World Series game when the shooting occurred but none of the other residents saw anybody with a gun, he said.
