A 12-year-old Santa Ana boy was shot in the hand about 8:45 p.m. Thursday on a Santa Ana street corner when youths in his group began arguing with three men on bicycles, witnesses said.

Santa Ana police late Thursday would only say that someone had been shot and that they could not release the age or the name of the victim.

According to witnesses, the argument began when about seven boys ranging in age from 12 to 18 were standing on the corner of Raymar Street and Western Avenue and were confronted by three men on bicycles who were described as Latinos in their late 20s.

After a brief altercation between the two groups, one of the men pulled a gun and shot toward the boys as they tried to run away, witnesses told The Times. One of the bullets struck a 12-year-old boy in the hand in front of his house on the 1700 block of Raymar Street, they said.

The victim, whose name was not immediately available, was taken to Coastal Communities Hospital in Santa Ana.
