High School Roundup : Dameworth, Drossin Notch League Cross-Country Wins

Bryan Dameworth of Agoura won his third consecutive title and the Chargers’ Deena Drossin won her second in the Frontier League cross-country finals at Paramount Ranch in Agoura on Thursday.

Dameworth, the defending state Division I champion, ran 15 minutes, 39 seconds over the 3-mile course, well ahead of his teammate, Derek Kite, who placed second in 16:29.

Drossin won the girls’ race in 19:19 and teammate Tiffany York placed second in 19:44.

Agoura won the boys’ team title for the third consecutive year and the girls’ title for the second year in a row.

In other meets:

Golden League--Canyon was upset by Antelope Valley, 26-35, at Rattlesnake Hill in Quartz Hill.

Cowboy sophomore Dave Hartman set a course record of 17 minutes over the 3-mile course, but Antelope Valley placed 5 runners in the top 10 to easily turn back Canyon, the No. 4-ranked team in the state Division I poll.

Mike Rattary place fourth in 18:21 for Canyon.

Pacific League--Eliazar Herrera, Pablo Herrera and Creighton Harris placed third, fourth and fifth as Hoover won the title at Crescenta Valley Park in La Crescenta.

Hoover scored 27 points, well ahead of runner-up Crescenta Valley (70).

Muir’s Robert Nelson won the individual title in 15:34 over the 3-mile course. Eliazar Herrera ran 16:11, Pablo Herrera clocked 16:37 and Harris timed 16:52.

Ed Yuh of Glendale placed second in 16:11.

Valley Pac-8 Conference--Brian Gastelum’s victory led Birmingham to the title at Pierce College.

Gastelum, a junior, ran a personal best of 15:41 over the 3-mile course as the Braves totaled 49 points, 5 ahead of runner-up North Hollywood.

Roberto Lopez (16:41) and Daniel Glasband (16:46) placed second and third for North Hollywood.

GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL

L. A. Baptist d. Western Christian, 15-1, 15-3, 15-5--The Knights finished their undefeated regular season behind Sandy Null’s 9 kills in an Alpha League match at L. A. Baptist.

L. A. Baptist (15-0, 10-0), ranked No. 1 in the Southern Section 1-A Division and the team that likely will be top-seeded when playoffs start Wednesday, got 5 service aces and 2 kills from Andrea Lucadam.

Cleveland d. Taft, 15-12, 15-17, 15-13--Nancy Nicholls had 12 kills for the Cavaliers in a Northwest Valley League match at Cleveland. Cleveland (11-3, 7-3) finished second in the league standings behind Chatsworth.

Calabasas d. Santa Paula, 15-9, 15-3, 15-6--Lisa Suwara had 12 kills and Shari Sakamoto had 15 digs to lead the Coyotes at Calabasas, in their final Frontier League match. Calabasas (10-4, 8-2) was league runner-up to Agoura.

Village Christian d. Montclair Prep, 15-3, 15-6, 15-2--Beth Sickels had 4 kills and Jenny Gibeau added 3 for Village Christian.
