An attack Sunday on a San Diego prostitute has prompted a local task force that is investigating a series of murders to ask the victim, or anyone who knows the victim, to come forward.

“It’s important that we talk to the victim so that we can determine if it was (connected to the) serial attacks,” Sheriff’s Sgt. Liz Foster said.

The attack occurred at 6:30 p.m. near 25th Street and Imperial Avenue, and was reported by a third party, Foster said.

The woman apparently feared arrest if she came forward, Foster added.

The Metropolitan Homicide Task Force is investigating whether Sunday’s assault is linked to Washington’s Green River serial murders, which involved mostly prostitutes, Foster said. Most of the 32 San Diego victims have been strangled, as in the Green River series, and most were either prostitutes or transients, Foster said.

Sunday’s attack took place eight blocks from where the last murder victim was found, Foster said.

Diane Ampuro Luna’s partly clothed body was found Oct. 23. The 31-year-old was strangled and left at 32nd and C streets.

Anyone with information on the identity of the victim is asked to contact the Sheriff’s Department or the San Diego Police Department.
