Pasadena : Sprinkler Ordinance OKd

Share

The Board of Directors has approved an ordinance requiring the installation of automatic fire sprinklers in all buildings taller than 5 stories or 75 feet.

The ordinance requires building owners to install the sprinklers within 3 years, and will become law by the end of the year. A 1-year extention can be granted if a building is historically significant or contains asbestos that must first be removed.

The city now requires automatic sprinklers on new buildings larger than 10,000 square feet.

The Fire Department estimates the new ordinance will affect about 50 buildings.

The ordinance was proposed in response to the May 4 fire that occurred in the 62-story First Interstate Bank tower in Los Angeles.
