Two Navy men were arrested Tuesday at the 32nd Street Naval Station in connection with an Oct. 16 robbery in which Marjorie Reed, the wife of a Lodi city councilman, was severely injured, police said.

Dwayne Elliott, 21, and Willy Rankin, 22, assigned to the destroyer Elliot, were taken to County Jail downtown and booked on suspicion of robbery, Deputy Dist. Atty. Mike Carpenter said.

The two were arrested six days after William J. Austin, 20, of Southeast San Diego was arrested in connection with the October assault.

Austin was booked on suspicion of robbery and attempted murder. The two suspects arrested Tuesday, however, were booked only on suspicion of robbery, Carpenter said, because evidence did not support an attempted murder charge.

The men were arraigned Wednesday and released by the judge after agreeing to return for a Nov. 22 hearing.

Reid was found beaten and unconscious outside Kelly’s Steak House near the Town & Country Hotel in Mission Valley. She was hospitalized with head injuries, a broken hip and a broken knee, a hospital spokeswoman said. Her wallet, containing $200, was missing, police said.

Reid and her husband, Fred, were in San Diego for the League of California Cities annual convention.

Lodi is northeast of Stockton in Northern California.
