A moderate earthquake with a magnitude of 4.5 rocked the San Francisco Bay Area and parts of Central California, officials reported. Pat Jorgensen of the U.S. Geological Survey in Menlo Park said the temblor had an epicenter 11 miles east-northeast of San Jose, along the Calaveras Fault. Most residents reported feeling two separate shocks, seconds apart, that lasted a total of 10 to 20 seconds. San Jose police said there were reports of broken windows there. The quake was felt as far away as Modesto, where police also said there were reports of broken windows and people falling out of chairs. The temblor was felt in a wide area stretching at least as far north as Eureka, 200 miles north of San Francisco, and as far south as Seaside in Monterey County, about 120 miles to the south.
