Loyola Marymount University, ranked in the Top 20 in several preseason polls, will preview its basketball teams Saturday in the annual Crimson-Gray intra-squad game in Gersten Pavilion at 1 p.m. The women’s team will follow with an intra-squad game at approximately 3. Nine players are returning to the men’s team that led the nation in scoring last year at more than 110 points per game. Leading scorer Hank Gathers gave an indication of what was to come in last year’s intra-squad contest when he scored 60 points. The women’s team, which made dramatic improvement while winning 15 games last season, returns four starters.

The Loyola Marymount women’s volleyball team will play a non-conference home match at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday against U.S. International University. The Lions entered the week at 8-16 and have lost nine of their last 11 matches. Outside hitter Leslie Wohlford continues to rank among the nation’s statistical leaders, standing seventh in kill average at 4.8 per game.

The Long Beach Shoreline Half Marathon will start at 7:30 a.m. Sunday with a field of 3,500 expected. The race, sponsored by Community Rehabilitation Industries, will have a large wheelchair contingent. The flat course begins on Ocean Boulevard by the Convention Center, circles the Queen Mary, heads east along the shore, then turns west and finishes at Shoreline Drive near Pine Avenue. Race day registration will be available at 6 a.m. for $19 or $100 for teams of five or fewer. Proceeds will benefit the CRI training and job placement programs.
