A Los Angeles teen-age girl was fatally shot as she sat in a car and a Hawaiian Gardens teen-ager was stabbed to death on a street in separate gang attacks, authorities said Saturday.
The deaths contributed to already record numbers of gang killings. The Los Angeles Police Department has tallied more than 200 gang slayings this year in the city, up 25% over the same period last year.
Monique Murphy, 16, a reputed gang member, was caught in a hail of bullets at 11:10 p.m. Friday as she sat in a car with two companions, who were unhurt, outside a South-Central liquor store, said Police Sgt. Bob Martin.
Rival gang members were blamed for the shooting, but no arrests had been made, he said.
Earlier Friday, a 15-year-old boy died of a single stab wound inflicted outside his suburban Hawaiian Gardens home, said Sheriff’s Deputy Dan Cox.
Joseph Patrick Tomelty, a reputed gang member, was pronounced dead at the hospital at 8:50 p.m., and no arrests had been made, Cox said.
