Torrey Pines’ Flanagan Will Attend Arizona

Kevin Flanagan, a 6-foot 9-inch, 235-pound senior forward on the Torrey Pines High School basketball team, has signed a national letter of intent to attend the University of Arizona.

“The coaching staff at Arizona is outstanding,” Flanagan said. “In addition to Lute Olson, the assistant coaches really impressed me. And the players seemed real educated. They weren’t a bunch of renegades out there on the court.”

Flanagan, who averaged 18.8 points and 9.8 rebounds a game as a junior, chose Arizona over SDSU, USD, Arizona State, UC Santa Barbara, Boston College, California and Seton Hall.

“I was considering (SDSU and USD) very heavily,” he said. “(SDSU’s) Jim Brandenburg has a terrific reputation. And (USD’s) Hank Egan, I felt, was going to take a special interest in developing me as a player.

“I was prepared to wait for the later signing date, but I was ready and happy with my decision.”
