NBA Roundup : Jordan Outscores Barkley, 52-42, but 76ers Win

From Associated Press

Charles Barkley is a hard man to please.

He wasn’t satisfied with his 42 points and 16 rebounds Wednesday night as the Philadelphia 76ers defeated Chicago, 123-110, at Philadelphia despite a Spectrum record 52 points by the Bulls’ Michael Jordan.

“I haven’t played up to my potential so far this year, and I’ve been disappointed in my play,” said Barkley, who made 18 of 25 shots. “I got a lot of offensive rebounds (11) though, and that helped.”

Scoring 52 points for the second time this season, Jordan broke the Spectrum record of 51 set by Moses Malone, then of the 76ers, against Detroit on Nov. 4, 1984.

Although he missed only 5 of 29 shots, Jordan also was unhappy.

“It’s not satisfying when you score 52 points and lose,” he said. “My goal is to win. We just didn’t have a good team effort tonight.”

After the 76ers took a 104-82 lead with 8:40 left, Jordan scored 11 points during a 20-8 burst, but the Bulls got no closer than 10 points.

Ron Anderson and Mike Gminski each added 19 points for the 76ers.

Boston 107, Golden State 104--Dennis Johnson made a 3-point shot with 1 second left to lift the Celtics, playing without ailing Larry Bird, to victory over the Warriors at Boston.

Bird was in uniform but did not play because of tendinitis.

The Celtics beat Golden State for the 11th consecutive time in Boston Garden dating to 1978.

Danny Ainge put Boston ahead, 104-103, on a 3-point shot with 33 seconds left, but the Warriors’ Rod Higgins made 1 of 2 free throws with 22 seconds left.

Kevin McHale led the Celtics with 25 points, Robert Parish had 23 and Jim Paxson added 20. Higgins led Golden State with 21 points, and Chris Mullin had 20.

Detroit 94, San Antonio 88--Joe Dumars scored 20 points, including 10 in the fourth quarter, and the Pistons held off the Spurs at San Antonio for their seventh victory without a defeat.

The Pistons are the only undefeated team in the National Basketball Assn.

San Antonio got within 81-80 when Greg Anderson made a 3-point play with 5:15 left, but Isiah Thomas hit consecutive baskets to keep the Pistons in control.

Detroit clinched the victory on 2 free throws by John Salley, which made it 92-86 left with 1:40 left.

Phoenix 123, Indiana 104--Armon Gilliam scored 28 points, and Tom Chambers got 8 of his 20 in the first 7 minutes of the fourth quarter as the Suns rallied to beat the winless Pacers at Phoenix.

Reggie Miller hit 3 baskets as Indiana (0-7) went on a 14-2 run to take an 81-78 lead with 2:33 left in the third quarter. The Pacers led, 89-85, heading into the final quarter.

The Suns opened the fourth quarter with runs of 7-0, 9-0 and 4-0 to take a 105-93 lead with 5:19 left. Chambers had a dunk, a jumper, a layup and 2 free throws as the Suns outscored the Pacers, 20-4.
