Passer-By Pulls Pair From Car Just Before It Explodes

SMITHTOWN, N. Y. —
A fire marshal who came across a burning overturned car on his way to work Tuesday braved the smoke and flames to pull the two occupants to safety moments before the gas tank exploded, police said.
City Fire Marshal Carmine Vaccariello, 54, and the driver, Carol Colvin, 20, escaped injury. The passenger, Paul Jessup, 23, suffered head and shoulder injuries and was taken to a hospital.
