Downey : Permanent Float Barn OKd

Share

The Downey City Council has approved a plan to build a permanent facility for the city’s Rose Float Assn. to construct, decorate and store their Rose Parade float. The new building will be at Independence Park, off Dunrobin Avenue.

Councilwoman Diane Boggs voiced her concern that the facility would disrupt residents in the R-1 properties located 46 feet away from the proposed site. Boggs said residents of neighboring single-family homes might be bothered by noise of the construction for the float. The building might also attract muggers to the area if there is not adequate outside lighting, she said.

The council agreed to the proposal, suggesting that the Rose Float Assn. inform residents of the project and work with the Building Department in completing plans.

The city expects construction costs to run between $80,000 and $100,000. The association expects to use the building for its regular meetings and fund-raising events. The group said it would consider sharing the facility with other groups in the city, such as the Downey Christmas Parade committee.
